1958-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014
ErrorDescription
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1958-D 5-cent WRPM-014, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark where the secondary D impression is both displaced and rotated relative to the primary, creating a more complex overlap pattern than a simple directional shift. The tilted component means the two D impressions are not parallel to each other, producing varying degrees of visible separation around the letter's curves and straight elements. Die markers on the obverse include a short die gouge below the right side of the N in IN — a compact but distinctive marker in the motto area. Reverse markers include a die scratch running northeast from the right side of the center crossbar of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, a directional striation documenting the die's surface condition and helping fingerprint this specific reverse die. No external cross-references beyond the Wexler listing are currently known. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1958, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. Schlag's Monticello reverse design, depicting Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate, served from 1938 through 2003. The 14th cataloged repunched mintmark for the 1958-D date indicates a reasonably diverse population of RPM varieties within the Denver die inventory for this year, and tilted or rotated RPMs are considered more diagnostically interesting than simple directional shifts because the angular misalignment produces a distinctive non-parallel overlap where the separation between primary and secondary impressions varies around the D's perimeter — maximum at the points farthest from the rotation axis and minimum at the axis itself.
