Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1958-D 5¢ WRPM-012, this Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/D Tilted (Rotated) repunched mintmark — a variant where the secondary D impression was applied at a rotational angle relative to the primary, creating a distinctive offset pattern where different portions of the letter show varying degrees of separation rather than a uniform directional shift. No cross-references to other cataloging systems are currently known. Obverse die markers include a vertical die scratch to the left of the lower forehead of Jefferson's portrait, while the reverse carries numerous die scratches running northeast from the top of Monticello — a cluster of directional scratches in the upper portion of the building's facade. The tilted or rotated RPM classification distinguishes this variety from simple directional repunches (north, south, east, west) because rotational offset produces an asymmetric separation pattern: portions of the D near the rotation's pivot point show minimal separation while areas distant from the pivot show progressively more offset, creating a fanned appearance. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1958 in standard copper-nickel composition (75% copper, 25% nickel) weighing 5.00 grams with a diameter of 21.21 mm. The 1958-D represents the last year of Schlag's original reverse design before the Mint made modifications in subsequent decades. The twelfth cataloged RPM for the 1958-D nickel indicates a substantial variety population, and the tilted subtype adds a diagnostic dimension that appeals to collectors who specialize in classifying the specific mechanics of mintmark misalignment events.
