Description
Cross-referenced as Fivaz-Stanton FS-501, this 1958 Denver Jefferson Nickel carries a remarkable D/Inverted D repunched mintmark where the initial punch was applied with the D rotated 180 degrees before a corrective normal-orientation strike. Die markers: UVC-481, DMR-006. Stage A: REDS (unconfirmed). Stage B: Reverse and obverse are MDS. Stage C: LDS (unconfirmed). Comments: D/Inverted D. FS-501. The REDS designation (rarely used) suggests a refined early die state classification. Inverted mintmarks are among the most dramatic RPM types because the 180-degree rotation creates immediately visible remnants protruding beyond the correctly oriented final D. Schlag's Jefferson Nickel was struck at Denver in 75% copper, 25% nickel (5.0 g, 21.21 mm). Inverted varieties document instances where the operator inadvertently rotated the punch tool before hammering it into the die.
