1958-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista under internal code UVC-421 and die marriage reference DMR-005, this 1958-D Jefferson Nickel is the fourth cataloged repunched mintmark for the date-mint combination. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B where both reverse and obverse are at mid-die-state, and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The mid-die-state designation for both dies in Stage B indicates the variety is most commonly encountered in a moderate state of die wear, with early and late die state specimens less frequently documented. The 1958-D marks the final year of the original Jefferson Nickel reverse design before the designer's initials FS (Felix Schlag) were added to the reverse in 1966, making late-1950s Jefferson varieties part of a distinct design era within the series. Struck at the Denver Mint in 1958, the coin is composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse design, selected through a public competition in 1938, depicts Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate with its characteristic columned portico. The existence of at least four cataloged RPM varieties for the 1958-D date reflects the volume of repunched mintmark events that occurred when hundreds of working dies each received their D mintmark individually by hand at the Denver Mint.
