Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team with no additional cross-references currently known, this 1957-D Jefferson nickel carries the designation WRPM-004 for its repunched D mintmark. The reverse provides the primary die marker: a die gouge situated in the field to the left of center from the U in UNITED, a feature that anchors attribution to this specific die pair regardless of the mintmark's condition on any given specimen. Repunched mintmarks on Jefferson nickels from the mid-1950s resulted from the hand-punching process used at the Denver Mint, where a worker physically hammered the D punch into each working die. Slight misalignment between the first and final impression created the doubled mintmark appearance that collectors seek. The 1957-D Jefferson nickel had a mintage of 136.828 million pieces, a robust production figure for the era. Without CONECA or other independent cross-references, this WRPM-004 relies solely on the Wexler catalog for formal recognition, though the die gouge near the U of UNITED provides sufficiently distinctive diagnostics for confident attribution. Collectors examining 1957-D nickels should check the mintmark area on the reverse at the right side of Monticello for any suggestion of a secondary punch impression before confirming with the field die gouge.
