1957-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-002

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with internal tracking code UVC-417 and die marriage reference DMR-003, this 1957-D Jefferson Nickel exhibits a D/D West repunched mintmark where the initial D punch was positioned slightly to the east of its final corrected location, leaving the remnant of the first impression visible to the west (left) of the primary D. Westward repunched mintmarks are among the directional classifications used by variety specialists to categorize the relative position of the secondary punch impression, with west indicating the first attempt was to the right of where the engraver intended the final mintmark to sit. Die stage documentation records three states: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C where both reverse and obverse reach late die state. The Jefferson Nickel was designed by Felix Schlag and struck at the Denver Mint in 1957, composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.00 grams with a 21.21 mm diameter. The original Monticello reverse design, in continuous use from 1938, provided a consistent placement field for the D mintmark to the right of Monticello's building, and variations in the hand-punching process at the Denver Mint created the numerous repunched mintmark varieties cataloged across the late 1950s Jefferson Nickel production. The 1957-D had a substantial mintage, reflecting the high demand for circulating coinage during the postwar economic expansion. Examination under 10x magnification focused on the mintmark area reveals the westward displacement most clearly at the D's vertical bar, where the two overlapping impressions create a thickened or split appearance in the letter's left stroke.
