1954-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-008

Description

Tilted and rotated, the D mintmark on WRPM-008 reveals a D/D repunch on the 1954-D Roosevelt Silver Dime where a second impression of the mintmark punch landed at a slightly different angle from the first. During this era, individual mintmarks were hand-punched into each working die at the respective branch mint, and the inherent imprecision of manual placement generated the repunched mintmark varieties that collectors prize today. The Wexler Team attributed this variety under ID 1954-D 10¢ WRPM-008 with no additional cross-references in other cataloging systems. Obverse die markers provide attribution confirmation beyond the mintmark itself: an ESE/WNW die crack runs along the upper front of the hair, while a die crack extends SSE from the rim at approximately the 12:45 position, running slightly into the hair to a die chip before turning SE along the hairline. On the reverse, a NNE die scratch extends from the left lower inside of the L in PLURIBUS, and a die chip occupies the right side of the right upper olive leaf. Denver struck 106,397,000 Roosevelt Dimes in 1954, all on 90% silver planchets — these would be among the last silver dimes produced before the Coinage Act of 1965 ended silver in circulating coinage. The combination of a tilted repunch with extensive secondary die markers across both faces makes WRPM-008 one of the more diagnostically rich RPM varieties within the Roosevelt Silver Dime series, rewarding patient examination of circulated specimens pulled from pre-1965 accumulations.
