1954-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001
Error
Description
Showing a D/D tilted or rotated repunched mintmark, the 1954-D Roosevelt dime WRPM-001 preserves evidence of the hand-punching process that was standard practice at branch mints through the early 1990s. Before die preparation was fully mechanized, individual mintmarks were hand-punched into working dies by Mint engravers, and when the initial punch was misaligned or positioned incorrectly, a second impression was applied over or near the first. The result on WRPM-001 is a secondary D mintmark visible at a tilt relative to the final, correctly positioned D. The Wexler Team cataloged this as 1954-D 10¢ WRPM-001 with no additional cross-references. Die markers supporting this attribution include an N/S die scratch in the field above the S of TRUST, a small die gouge centered below the ST of TRUST, and a small die chip dot centered between the S and T. On the reverse, NW die scratches extend from the top of the R in PLURIBUS running through the lower olive limb, with an additional die scratch running south from the lower right of the N in UNITED. Roosevelt dimes of the 1954-D issue were struck in 90% silver at the Denver Mint, with a total production of 106.4 million pieces. The silver composition adds collector appeal beyond the variety itself, and this RPM represents a tangible artifact of pre-automation die preparation. Repunched mintmark varieties were eliminated from new production after the Mint began placing mintmarks directly into master hubs starting in 1990 for most denominations.
