1953-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-010

Description

WRPM-010 on the 1953-S Jefferson Nickel is a repunched S mintmark variety with documented die markers on both sides. Obverse die markers: a light die gouge at the upper left side of the Y in LIBERTY, and two die gouges (appearing as dots) between the star and the 1 in the date. Reverse die markers: a die scratch running southeast through the right side of the O of MONTICELLO. Wexler Variety ID: 1953-S 5¢ WRPM-010. The 1953 Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint — the final year of S-mint Jefferson Nickel production before San Francisco ceased regular coin production in 1955, making 1953-S nickels a popular terminal-date collectible. The obverse combination — the Y-in-LIBERTY gouge and the date-adjacent dot gouges — alongside the MONTICELLO scratch provides a three-point diagnostic for confident attribution even in the absence of prominent mintmark displacement. The Y-in-LIBERTY gouge is a clean, specific marker at a well-defined portrait location. WRPM-010 is catalogued in the Wexler repunched mintmark reference for the Jefferson Nickel series.
