Description
The 1953 (S) Jefferson Nickel was struck at the San Francisco Mint as a nickel in the Jefferson Nickels Original Design 1938-2003 series. With a mintage of 19.2 million, this is a less common issue โ the lowest mintage among 3 mint variants, representing only 15% of total production. The obverse features Thomas Jefferson facing left and the reverse displays Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia estate. San Francisco produced its second-lowest nickel mintage of the decade. The San Francisco Mint, a Gold Rush-era institution, now specializes in proof and collector coinage. Estimated market value ranges from $0 to $30 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5 grams, 21.2 mm in diameter, with a plain edge. Cataloged as PCGS #4051.
