Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #2, this 1953-S Jefferson Nickel WRPM-003 carries dual attribution verification. Obverse die markers include small die gouges to the right of the 9 and the upper 5 in the date. The reverse features a strong die gouge running WSW/ENE through the lower first S in STATES. The CONECA cross-reference confirms independent documentation beyond the Wexler catalog. Struck at San Francisco in 1953, this nickel is 75% copper and 25% nickel, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.21 mm diameter. Schlag's original design depicts Jefferson on the obverse and Monticello on the reverse. The 1953-S was among the last San Francisco nickel production years — the facility ceased striking five-cent pieces after 1954, making late S-mint Jefferson varieties inherently limited.
