1953-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-006

Description

Sixth repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1953 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-006 preserves a secondary S impression visible beneath the primary punch. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the obverse progresses through two stages with distinct markers. Stage A features a small die gouge between the R and U in TRUST, plus a die scratch running north from the knot in the ribbon of the queue — a detail tied to Felix Schlag's original portrait design. Stage B sees these markers fade below visibility, requiring collectors to rely on the mintmark doubling alone for attribution at this later state. On the reverse, Stage A shows short vertical die gouges above the right roof of Monticello, while Stage B retains them as very weak but still visible remnants. Cataloged under Wexler Variety ID 1953-S 5-cent WRPM-006. The 1953-S was produced during the mid-century period when San Francisco mintmarks were individually hand-punched into working dies, a process inherently prone to the slight misalignments that create repunched varieties.
