1953 Proof Jefferson Nickel - PR-5DER-002T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trails on 1953PR-5DER-002T show on FIVE CENTS, OF and AMERICA, offset at 300°, west-northwest. TrailDies' number marks a 1953 proof (PR) nickel (5), reverse design extension (DER), file 002, trails (T). It is the reverse of the coin whose obverse is 1953PR-5DEO-002T. Both sides are at a middle die state (the entry omits the stage letter): the obverse ST of TRUST has serifs split at the top, and on the reverse a little gouge lies inside the semicircular window above the door of Monticello. Robert M. Pelletier found it. Rotary buffing, that is, polishing the die face, is the usual explanation given for trails, with die-to-hub movement as the minority one.
