1953 Proof Jefferson Nickel - PR-5DEO-001T Trail Die Obverse
Error
Description
1953PR-5DEO-001T is a 1953 proof Jefferson nickel obverse with trails. TrailDies' number reads 1953 with PR for proof, 5 for the five-cent piece and DEO for the obverse; 001 is the file and the T says the die has trails. The lines come off both IN GOD WE TRUST and LIBERTY and run east at 080°, toward the right edge of the coin. TrailDies pairs this obverse with a reverse trail die that it numbers 1953S-5DER-001T, even though both sides belong to the same proof coin. TrailDies lists nothing distinctive on either face at the middle die state it describes. Robert Pelletier found the die. Trails are usually attributed to rotary polishing of the die, though a minority links them to movement of the die against the hub.
