1952-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-001

Description

Holding the primary RPM-001 designation, this repunched mintmark variety of the 1952-D Washington Quarter shows a D over D displacement to the north, where the original D punch was placed slightly lower than the final corrected position, leaving the first impression visible beneath. The variety also carries the ODV-005 designation indicating a specific obverse die variety with a small die opening, and MMS-002 identifying the mintmark style. Repunched mintmarks on Washington Quarters occurred because each working die received its mintmark through individual hand-punching at the branch mint, and when placement was unsatisfactory, the engraver struck the punch again without fully obliterating the first impression. The northward displacement means the final D sits above the ghost of the original, visible under moderate magnification. The 1952-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at the Denver Mint during the silver composition era from 1932 through 1964. Struck at 6.25 grams, this primary RPM variety documents a northward-displaced D mintmark with confirming obverse die variety and mintmark style designations.
