1952-D Doubled Die Obverse DDO-002

Description

Extra thickness on IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and four serifs on the lower R of LIBERTY distinguishes DDO-002 of the 1952-D Washington Quarter, where the serif detail provides an unusually specific attribution point. The four visible serifs result from the doubled hub impression creating a ghosted second set of serif strokes adjacent to the originals. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-0797 and DMR-008, the obverse carries the ODV-006 designation. Three progressive stages are documented: Stage A shows the obverse in early die state with the reverse identified as MMS-002, Stage B reveals a light die crack on the forehead and hair at mid-die state with the reverse also at mid-die state, and Stage C in late die state remains unconfirmed. The mintmark variety MMS-002 adds a secondary attribution element. The 1952-D Washington Quarter was struck at Denver in 90% silver and 10% copper during Flanagan's long-running design series. The progressive die crack across the forehead creates a useful die-state diagnostic for determining early versus mid-state specimens.
