1952 (D) Washington Quarter - Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001 / DDO-001

Description

DDO-001, which Wexler numbers WDDO-001, is a doubled die obverse on the 1952-D Washington quarter with strong spread on LIBERTY, medium spread on the date, and lighter spread on the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. Both catalogs list it as Cherrypickers FS-101 (Wexler: FS-25-1952D-101). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties records a strong counterclockwise spread from a pivot near 9 o'clock on LIBERTY and the date, on the designer's initials and IN GOD WE TRUST, and on the lower queue. On the obverse a short crack reaches in from the rim halfway between the I and B of LIBERTY. On the reverse a deep scratch joins the M in AMERICA at its two upper points, a crack passes through BUS of PLURIBUS and reaches the top of the left wing, and a scratch runs parallel to the rim over the second A in AMERICA. The coin was submitted by L&C Coins and Joe Rizdy. VarietyVista credits Andrew Prechtl and gives the obverse as ODV-005. Under UVC-0796 and DMR-006, stage A has the obverse in an early state and the reverse, MMS-002, early too. A middle stage B is unconfirmed. In stage C the obverse is late and a crack runs from RIBUS of PLURIBUS to the rim, also late.
