1951-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-002

Description

Second repunched mintmark cataloged for the 1951 San Francisco Jefferson Nickel, WRPM-002 preserves evidence of the hand-punching process that was standard Mint practice for applying mintmarks until 1990. Detailed die markers support attribution across both sides: the obverse shows a die scratch running west from the bottom of the W in WE, plus a die gouge appearing as a dot between the bottoms of the 1 and 9 in the date. The reverse carries a die scratch running south from the bottom right of the M in MONTICELLO, along with die scratches running NW from the top left of both the V and E in FIVE. San Francisco struck approximately 7.78 million nickels in 1951, a moderate mintage from an era when Felix Schlag's design was well established in its thirteenth year of production. The repunched mintmark itself shows evidence of the S mintmark struck in two slightly different positions, with the initial impression partially visible beneath the final placement.
