1951-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-001

Description

Cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #6, the 1951-S WRPM-001 Jefferson nickel is a repunched mint mark variety from the San Francisco Mint. The obverse carries extensive die markers including two die scratches running southeast from the underside of Jefferson's chin, along with numerous other die scratches distributed across the obverse field and design elements. These scratches likely resulted from die polishing or accidental contact during handling. The reverse provides its own confirmation points: a small die gouge appears at the upper right of the second T in STATES, and another small die gouge sits to the left of the second S in STATES. San Francisco produced 7.8 million nickels in 1951, one of the lower postwar mintages for the denomination, contributing to the relative scarcity of all varieties from this date and mint. The abundance of die markers on both sides makes WRPM-001 one of the more readily attributable repunched mint mark varieties in the Jefferson nickel series, as the supporting diagnostics are plentiful.
