Description

As the primary cataloged RPM for the 1951-S date, this VarietyVista-documented Jefferson Nickel from the San Francisco Mint holds the lead catalog position. Die markers UVC-375 / DMR-002: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B with die scratches north-south in both archways and a die gouge dot in the field under I of MONTICELLO at EMDS, with obverse at EMDS; Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The die scratches appearing within both Monticello archways at the same die state suggest a common source of surface damage affecting symmetrical architectural features. Composed of 75% copper and 25% nickel at 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, Felix Schlag's design places the S mintmark to the right of Monticello. The die gouge dot in the field under the I provides a precise reverse attribution point independent of the archway scratches.
