1951-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-007

Description

Documented by VarietyVista on the 1951-S Jefferson Nickel, RPM-007 is a repunched mintmark variety catalogued under UVC-567 and DMR-008. The mintmark shift is S over S West, indicating the initial punch was placed to the west of the final correct position before re-punching. Jefferson Nickels were designed by Felix Schlag in 1938, and the 1951-S is a San Francisco Mint issue from the era when mintmarks were still punched individually into working dies. Die stages are documented in three phases: Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, marked by a strong die scratch running north-south through the left archway of Monticello on the reverse, with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C is late die state, currently unconfirmed. The strong north-south scratch through the left archway at Stage B is a helpful attribution marker beyond the mintmark repunch itself. Repunched mintmarks on Jefferson Nickels from the pre-1968 hand-punched era are well documented across multiple dates and facilities. Collectors should examine the S mintmark under magnification for the westward secondary ghost impression alongside the corrected final mintmark position.
