Error
Description
An S/S West variety documented by VarietyVista, this 1951-S Jefferson Nickel shows the secondary S displaced westward on the reverse. Die markers UVC-511 / DMR-007 track three stages: Stage A at EDS (unconfirmed); Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed); Stage C at LDS with die scratches North-South through both outside archways on Monticello and the obverse at LDS. The archway scratches at LDS document surface deterioration in Schlag's architectural reverse detail. At 75% copper, 25% nickel, 5.0 grams and 21.21 mm, the San Francisco Mint's 1951 production required manual S mintmark application. The westward displacement indicates the initial punch landed east of target, requiring correction that left overlapping impressions visible under magnification.
