1950 (D) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

On the 1950-D Denver Mint Washington Quarter, RPM-004 documents a D mint mark punched more than once into the working die, cataloged by VarietyVista (UVC-0730, DMR-010). Three die stages have been recorded. Stage A is early die state, though this remains unconfirmed. Stage B shows the reverse advancing to mid-die state with a die crack developing across the bust on the obverse. Stage C is cataloged as late die state (unconfirmed). The 1950-D Washington Quarter was struck in 90% silver — the standard composition for the series from its 1932 inception through 1964. Denver produced approximately 21.1 million quarters in 1950, and the hand-punching of mint marks into individual working dies during this era created opportunities for positional variation with each impression. The die crack across the bust that appears in Stage B provides a useful secondary attribution marker beyond the repunched mint mark itself, helping collectors confirm they have the correct die pair. RPM-004 represents the fourth documented repunched mint mark for this date, reflecting systematic cataloging of Denver Mint die varieties on silver Washington Quarters.
