1950-D Over Mint Mark OMM-001

Description

An over mintmark variety from the Denver Mint, this 1950 Washington silver quarter exhibits traces of one mintmark letter punched over another, a hallmark of the hand-punching era. Die markers UVC-0734 / DMR-014 document three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at EDS; Stage B at MDS showing a die crack across the eagle's lower right wing and a die crack across the bust; Stage C at LDS with the die crack extending to Q of QUARTER and into the queue. The progressive die crack growth from the eagle's wing to the QUARTER legend traces structural fatigue across the reverse die. Struck in 90% silver and 10% copper at 6.25 grams and 24.26 mm, Washington quarters from 1950 saw a Denver mintage of approximately 21.1 million, making die varieties from this production run moderately scarce.
