1950-D Repunched Mintmark RPM-003

Description

Documented by VarietyVista on the 1950-D Washington Quarter, RPM-003 is a repunched mintmark variety catalogued under UVC-0729 and DMR-009. Washington Quarters were struck in 90% silver through 1964, bearing John Flanagan's Washington portrait and the heraldic eagle reverse. The 1950-D mintmark was punched individually into each working die, creating the conditions for repunching errors documented as variety attributions. Die stages are documented in three phases: Stage A is early die state, currently unconfirmed. Stage B is mid-die state, also currently unconfirmed. Stage C is late die state, showing the reverse in late die state, a die crack across the upper hair on the obverse, and a die crack across the bust. The Stage C hair and bust die cracks are the most reliable late-state markers for placing a specimen within the attribution sequence. Repunched mintmarks on Washington Quarters are catalogued by VarietyVista but encountered less frequently than on Lincoln cents, reflecting lower die-usage rates at the quarter denomination.
