Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1950-D 25-cent WDDR-002 and carrying multiple cross-references including CONECA 2-R-VI, Cherrypickers FS-25-1950D-802, this Washington Silver Quarter displays extremely strong extra thickness on USA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, QUARTER DOLLAR, the wreath, and the eagle's head — an unusually comprehensive spread affecting nearly every major reverse design element. The CONECA Class VI designation identifies Distorted Hub Doubling, and the Cherrypickers listing confirms this variety's significance to collectors searching rolls and collections. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running ESE from the bottom of the I in LIBERTY, a die crack running east across the upper forehead extending into the hair, and a die crack running across the base of the bust. Reverse markers include a diagonal die scratch inside the upper D of DOLLAR, a die crack running down the eagle's right wing, and a die crack on the upper part of the eagle's left wing. The multiple die cracks across both dies — forehead, bust, and both wings — indicate this die pair was in an advanced state of deterioration, with structural failure propagating through high-stress design elements on both the obverse and reverse. The Washington Quarter was designed by John Flanagan and struck at the Denver Mint in 1950, composed of 90% silver at 6.25 grams with a diameter of 24.3 mm. The breadth of affected design elements across the entire reverse face makes this one of the more visually dramatic doubled die reverses in the Washington Quarter series, with the extra thickness on the eagle's head and wreath providing immediate visual confirmation even under moderate magnification.
