Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 1949-S Lincoln Wheat Cent from the San Francisco Mint bears the 43rd documented repunched S mintmark for the date. Cross-referenced as None known; Wexler Variety ID: 1949-S 1-cent WRPM-043. Die markers: obverse has a N/S die crack on the forehead above the eye; reverse shows a die clash at the lower right side of the C in CENT, a die gouge at the left underside of the horizontal bar of the last A in AMERICA, and a die crack running south on the right edge of the T of CENT. The forehead die crack and extensive reverse markers provide comprehensive die identification across both faces. Composed of 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc at 3.11 grams and 19.05 mm, the 1949-S was among the lower-mintage San Francisco issues of the late 1940s, and each die received its S mintmark through manual punch application at Philadelphia before shipment.
