Description

Die scratches running through the S mint mark area provide supplementary diagnostics alongside the repunched mint mark on WRPM-039 of the 1949 San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent. The S/S repunching shows a secondary mint mark impression displaced from the primary S, and the die scratches through this area create an intersection of two diagnostic features concentrated around the mint mark. Obverse die markers document the longest die scratch extending from the portrait area, providing an additional identification marker on the obverse face. The Wheat Cent reverse, with its paired wheat ears framing ONE CENT and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, carried this design from 1909 through 1958, and San Francisco Mint issues from the late 1940s represent the final decade of Wheat Cent production.
