1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-037

Description

1949-S WRPM-037 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West: the secondary S lies west of the primary. Obverse Stage A: an arcing scratch below the S of TRUST; a scratch heading south from the base of the L in LIBERTY; and a chip on the mint mark at its lower right edge. Stage B adds clashed dies to the right of the throat, several scratches heading north from around the top of the date's 1, and NW/SE scratches above the Y of LIBERTY. On the reverse, Stage A has a thin crack on the upper left wheat stalk that continues north almost to the top of the first E in E PLURIBUS; a gouge along the top edge of the last U in UNUM, on its right arm; a scratch heading south from the E of UNITED to the right edge of the first A in AMERICA; and a gouge on the lower right edge of the right wheat stalk, with a chip lined up below it. On Stage B the field around and over the top of the left wheat carries several scratches, and the crack no longer shows in the field from the top of the left stalk to the E of E PLURIBUS; instead it continues south along the inside of the stalk's left side, stopping halfway down. Strong diagonal scratches also cross the left wheat stem. David Bloomberg submitted Stage A and Henry Frischnecht Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references. The RPM photo is by Brian Ribar.
