1949-S Repunched Mintmark WRPM-026
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1949-S 1c WRPM-026, this San Francisco Mint Lincoln Wheat Cent repunched mint mark carries extensive die markers on both sides for reliable attribution. The obverse shows two strong die scratches to the left of the 1, three stronger die scratches running north from the top of the 9, two die scratches running north above the L of LIBERTY, and a die chip to the right of the E of WE. On the reverse, a strong die scratch connects the bottom of the T of UNITED with the left side of the first A of AMERICA, and another die scratch runs southeast from the bottom of the S of PLURIBUS. No other cross-references are known. The abundance of die scratches and gouges across both obverse and reverse makes this variety one of the more easily attributable RPMs for the 1949-S date, as the secondary die markers serve as quick confirmation points even before examining the mint mark itself. San Francisco Wheat Cents from the late 1940s were struck in modest quantities compared to Philadelphia, adding a layer of relative scarcity to any attributed variety.
