1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-023

Description

1949-S WRPM-023 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S South: the secondary S lies south of the primary. Obverse Stage A: N/S scratches around the date, including one between the 9 and 4; strong scratches on top of the head below the T of TRUST; and scratches under the beard. On Stage B all the Stage A scratches are weak, and an E/W scratch sits centered between GOD and WE. Stage C adds a chip left of the V of VDB and chips in the field below the chin. Stage D adds a chip under the nose and one on the lower lip. Reverse Stage A has numerous NE/SW scratches in the fields and NNW/SSE scratches through the E of ONE. On Stage B nearly all the field scratches, and the ones through the E of ONE, have been abraded away; new N/S scratches cross the ED of UNITED and the AM of AMERICA, and a strong scratch marks the lower right wheat stalk. By Stage C the Stage A markers have mostly faded or disappeared. Wexler notes no markers for reverse Stage D. David Bloomberg submitted Stages A, B and D, and John R. Schmitt Stage C.
