1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-021

Description

1949-S WRPM-021 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S South: the secondary S lies south of the primary. Obverse Stage A: NNW/SSE scratches cross the date (heaviest at the 4); the ST of TRUST carries NW/SE scratches; two short gouges run north from the hair, SW of WE; a gouge runs NNW from the rim below the back of the bust; and a heavy scratch heads SE from the E of WE, starting at its upper right. On Stage B the Stage A scratches have been abraded away apart from a weaker one from the E of WE, while both gouges remain. On Stage C just a few faint scratches from Stage A survive; a light E/W crack crosses over the designer's initials, and a scratch runs south from the bust beside the D of the initials, on its right. Reverse Stage A: heavy scratches, most of them heading north, cross the first S of STATES, its A, and its second S; scratches heading south from the last A of AMERICA to the right wheat stem; a long scratch heading N by E from the N of ONE (upper left side), ending right of the B in PLURIBUS; and light scratches that rise north from the top of CENT's T, with others crossing ONE's E. Stage B adds a chip in the field to the right of the lower right wheat stalk. On Stage C only weak scratches remain, at both S's of STATES and the last A of AMERICA.
