1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-020

Description

1949-S WRPM-020 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West: the secondary S lies west of the primary. Obverse Stage A shows scratches in the hairline on the forehead, with a strong one heading south along the forehead's edge; N/S scratches around the date; and several N/S scratches above, between and below the ERTY of LIBERTY. Stage B adds a gouge above the N of IN, to its right. Stage C adds a gouge over the E of WE and a NW/SE scratch between WE and the T of TRUST. Reverse Stage A: scratches heading south from the base of the O in ONE; N/S scratches above, inside and right of the C of CENT; a scratch heading south from the base of the U of UNITED; and a scratch that starts at the base of the I of UNITED, passes through the F of OF and stops at the top of the left wheat stem. Stage B adds a scratch that begins above the P of PLURIBUS and runs southeast through the LU, continuing along the base of the R to end at the left side of the B. Wexler labels Stage C a second reverse: it has a gouge near the rim at the upper left of the first E of E PLURIBUS, scratches heading south from the base of the second U of PLURIBUS, and strong N/S scratches at the T of CENT, above it, through it and below it.
