1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-019

Description

1949-S WRPM-019 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West: the secondary S lies west of the primary. Wexler traces the obverse through four stages. Stage A has a heavy NE/SW gouge at the G of GOD, on its upper left side, which Wexler suggests probably came from a dropped die; a NE/SW scratch within the D of GOD; scratches running NNW/SSE across the letters of LIBERTY; and N/S scratches over the back of the beard and the neck. On Stage B these markers are weaker, the LIBERTY scratches above all. Stage C adds a chip in the field over the 4 of the date, and Stage D an east-west crack above VDB. On the reverse, Stage A shows light scratches running N by W/S by E through the O and E of ONE. Stage B adds a chip on the left edge of the right wheat stalk, to the right of the last S of STATES. Stage C brings a wavy crack on the right wheat, heading south from the lower right grains out into the field. On Stage D, cracks appear at the center of the left wheat stalk, and the right-stalk crack is stronger. Submitters were John Bordner (Stage A), Wayne Herndon (Stage B), John R.
