1949 (S) Lincoln Wheat Cent - Repunched Mintmark WRPM-016

Description

1949-S WRPM-016 is a repunched mint mark on the 1949-S Lincoln Wheat cent, cataloged by the Wexler team. Wexler describes it as S/S West: the extra S lies west of the primary. Obverse Stage A: a strong gouge at the rim's edge below IN. Obverse Stage B: two SSW scratches from GOD's G to the hair; concentric east-west gouges through IN GOD WE, heaviest at GOD; very heavy, long north-south scratches centered above, between, and below LIBERTY's B and E; a series of scratches running north from LIBERTY's T and Y; and heavy NNW/SSE field scratches east and SE of the beard, crossing the date's 19. Obverse Stage C adds three scratches running south from the bottom of LIBERTY's T. Reverse Stage A: many arcing scratches below the wheat stem, close to the rim. Reverse Stage B brings a SSE scratch from the left wheat ear toward UNITED's U; a long scratch running south from the left wheat ear, west of ONE's O, toward the left upright of UNITED's U; and north-south scratches through ONE's E and CENT's T. Reverse Stage C adds a crack on the upper left wheat stalk. Brian Ribar submitted Stages A and C, and Al Raddi Stage B. Wexler lists no cross-references.
