Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1949-S 1¢ WRPM-014 and cross-referenced as CONECA RPM #10 and Coppercoins 1949S-1MM-010, this San Francisco Lincoln wheat cent features a repunched S mintmark with extensive die markers documented across two stages. On the obverse, die scratches run northward from above the 1 in the date into the field right of the chin, additional die scratches extend north from the TY of LIBERTY, and short die scratches appear in front of the eye. By Obverse Stage B, a die scratch develops to the right of the mintmark. The reverse Stage A shows die gouges above URIBU of PLURIBUS, a die chip beneath the second U of PLURIBUS, a die scratch running south from the right side of the second U and ending atop the right leg of the N in ONE, and short die gouges on the lower right side of the right wheat stalk. No significant markers have been noted for Reverse Stage B. The three independent cross-references from CONECA, Coppercoins, and the Wexler files confirm wide recognition of this variety among attribution services, and the extensive obverse die scratches provide multiple confirmation points.
