1947-S Repunched Mintmark RPM-005

Description

RPM-005 on the 1947-S Roosevelt Dime shows the S mintmark punched over a previous S displaced to the West (S/S West), with the Trumpet Tail mintmark style (MMS-002), attributed by VarietyVista. Die markers are UVC-166 and DMR-009. Stage A is early die state (unconfirmed). The Roosevelt Dime series began in 1946 following Franklin D. Roosevelt's death, and 1947 issues were struck in the 90% silver, 10% copper alloy standard for dimes through 1964. San Francisco Mint examples carry the S mintmark on the reverse, and the hand-punching process of this era frequently produced secondary impressions when the punch was re-struck at a slight offset. The S/S West shift places the secondary impression to the left of the dominant strike. The Trumpet Tail punch style (MMS-002) provides an additional layer of attribution context beyond the RPM direction alone.
