1947 (S) Roosevelt Dime - Over Mint Mark WOMM-002 / OMM-002

Description

1947-S WOMM-002 is an over mint mark on the 1947-S Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team and by VarietyVista as OMM-002, with an S punched over a D (S/D in both catalogs). Both cite it as FS-502 in the Cherrypickers' Guide; Wexler writes FS-10-1947S-502 (012). Wexler's Coins and Die Varieties follows two stages. At obverse stage A a strong northward scratch starts at the upper left of the W of WE and passes the N of IN on its right side, several SW-to-NE scratches on the nose cross a set of N-S scratches, and other scratches appear across the obverse. At obverse stage B a nearly horizontal crack lies in the hair just right of the top of the forehead, and many stage A scratches are weaker. On the reverse at stage A the mintmark is a Trumpet Tail S; several N-S scratches lie below the bottom of the left branch, one N-S scratch sits to the right of the torch top, a WSW-to-ENE scratch runs below the CA of AMERICA, and others are scattered across the reverse. At reverse stage B a rim gouge sits above the left side of the R of AMERICA and many stage A scratches are weaker. Wexler credits Paul Funaiole with stage A and Albert B. Raddi with stage B, and gives the CONECA number OMM #2. VarietyVista, crediting Hugh Campbell, describes the S as centered over the D and classes the reverse mintmark as MMS-002 (Trumpet Tail). Under its marker codes UVC-170 and DMR-013, both sides are in an early die state at stage A and a middle die state at stage B; stage C, a late die state, is unconfirmed.
