Description
Fourth documented repunched mintmark for the 1947 Denver Mint Roosevelt Dime, Wexler designation 1947-D 10¢ WRPM-004 records mintmark placement inconsistency during the second year of the Roosevelt Dime series. The Roosevelt Dime, designed by John R. Sinnock and introduced in 1946 to honor President Franklin D. Roosevelt shortly after his death in April 1945, was still a new design when the 1947-D dies were prepared. No other known cross-references exist for this variety in competing attribution systems. Repunched mintmarks on early Roosevelt Dimes follow the same hand-punching mechanism as on contemporary cents and other denominations: a mint employee at the Philadelphia die preparation facility used a small steel punch bearing the letter D to individually mark each working die bound for the Denver Mint. Four documented RPMs for the 1947-D dime indicates that mintmark misalignment occurred with moderate frequency during die preparation for this date — neither an isolated incident nor an especially prolific rate. The Denver Mint's first-year Roosevelt Dime production in 1946 had established new die configurations for the smaller dime-sized die face, and by 1947 these processes were still being refined. RPMs on Roosevelt Dimes from the late 1940s are collected by specialists who appreciate the combination of early series significance with tangible evidence of hand-done die preparation. The Wexler Team's systematic documentation of Roosevelt Dime RPMs provides a parallel record to their Wheat Cent RPM catalog, enabling cross-denominational comparison of mintmark application consistency during the post-war era.
