1947 (D) Roosevelt Dime - Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

1947-D WDDR-001 is a doubled die reverse on the 1947-D Roosevelt dime, cataloged by the Wexler team. ONE DIME shows a clockwise (CW) spread pivoting at 11:00, and a spread toward the center appears on AMERICA, DIME, NUM of UNUM, the outer leaves on the right and the dot on the right. Obverse Stage A: thick, wavy gouges cross the front of the hair, parts of the hair over the ear, the lower forehead, the tops of ERT and the middle of the Y in LIBERTY. Wexler suggests foreign material sat between the hub and the die during hubbing. N/S scratches lie left of the profile, and a short NE/SW scratch marks the back of the neck. On Obverse Stage B the Stage A gouges remain, the scratches in front of the profile are weak, and the neck scratch is still strong. On Obverse Stage C the gouges are still there, the profile scratches have nearly vanished, and the neck scratch remains strong. Reverse Stage A: curling scratches run westward left of the flame, curling NNE/SSW scratches lie right of the flame's lower part, and curling N/S scratches sit between the upper and lower oak leaves on the right. A scratch runs NNE from the upper right of the N in UNUM to the lower right oak leaves. NNW/SSE scratches cross the top leaf of the left-hand olive leaves, and on the left-hand side scratches run NW off the center olive leaf. On Reverse Stage B the scratches left of the flame are abraded away, those right of it are much reduced, and the remaining Stage A scratches are weaker; AMERICA's doubling is weak, showing mainly on the last A. On Reverse Stage C every earlier scratch is gone and the doubling on AMERICA has nearly disappeared. New on this stage are light N/S scratches left of the flame and torch holder, abrasion marks over and under the lower olive, two scratches running NE from the M in UNUM to AMERICA's last A, scratches heading NW off the N and second U of UNUM, and SE scratches under UNUM.
