1947-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
Error
Description
Struck in the second year of John R. Sinnock's Roosevelt Dime series, this 1947-D doubled die reverse shows close spread toward the center on UNITED STATES. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1947-D 10¢ WDDR-002, the variety features an abundance of die markers that aid in confident identification. The obverse carries E/W die scratches through IN GOD WE TRUST. On the reverse, a die scratch runs WSW/ESE from the oak stem to the mintmark, NW/SE die scratches pass through ES of STATES, a heavy eastward die scratch extends from the right side of the A in STATES near its center, and an SE die scratch descends from the lower right side of the D in UNITED. This wealth of die markers makes WDDR-002 one of the more readily attributable early Roosevelt Dime varieties. The 1947-D was struck in 90% silver composition at the Denver Mint during the post-war period when Roosevelt Dime production was still ramping up following the denomination's 1946 introduction as a tribute to President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
