1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-031

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 1947-D 1-cent WRPM-031, this repunched mintmark variety on the Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a D/D Tilted (Rotated) configuration where the final D mintmark overlaps an earlier D punch that was applied at a different angle. The Lincoln Wheat Cent was struck at the Denver Mint in 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc (3.11 grams, 19.05 mm diameter), featuring Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and wheat ears reverse. Repunched mintmarks occurred because mintmarks were individually hand-punched into each working die by Mint engravers until the practice was discontinued in 1990 when mintmarks were incorporated into the master die. If the first punch was misaligned or too shallow, the engraver would strike again, leaving traces of the original position visible beneath or beside the final mintmark. No cross-references to other attribution systems are currently known. Obverse die markers include a short die scratch under the D of GOD, a die scratch running southeast from the lower TR of TRUST ending in the field before the forehead, and a die scratch running east from the lower 1 of the date ending near the 9. Reverse markers include an east-west die scratch below BUS of PLURIBUS, short die scratches above and below the lower leg of the N of CENT, and a long die scratch running east under OF and AM of AMERICA. The high variety number (WRPM-031) for this date indicates the Denver Mint's 1947 mintmark application was particularly inconsistent, generating numerous documented repunched varieties.
