1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-029
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent exhibits a D/D Tilted repunched mintmark, also described as rotated, where the initial D punch was applied at a different angle before being corrected to its final upright position. The tilted orientation of the first punch distinguishes WRPM-029 from more common directional RPMs where the initial punch is simply offset in a cardinal direction. A die gouge extends from Lincoln's bowtie to the 1 of the date, providing a prominent die marker for rapid identification. Additional detailed die markers have been documented across both obverse and reverse to assist with attribution across different die states. Struck in the standard copper-zinc composition (95% copper, 5% zinc), the 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent was produced in substantial quantities at the Denver Mint during the postwar production expansion. Tilted or rotated repunched mintmarks are less frequently encountered than simple directional repunchings, as they require the die sinker to have not only mispositioned but also misaligned the angular orientation of the mintmark punch, adding an extra dimension of error to the process. Die scratch runs north from the lower right side of the 1 in date. Die scratch at back of neck runs NW along the edge of the lower head. Die scratch runs NE from the top of the T of LIBERTY. Reverse: E/W die scratches run from the O and end inside the N of ONE. Two die scratches run from the lower left wheat stalk ending at the right edge of the O in OF.
