Description

With the war two years behind it, the Denver Mint in 1947 was firmly entrenched in peacetime coinage production, stamping Lincoln Wheat Cents on planchets restored to the standard 95% copper and 5% tin-zinc bronze alloy. WRPM-027, attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-027, documents a working die on which the D mint mark was punched at least twice, leaving a secondary impression visible under magnification alongside the final accepted placement. Twenty-seven cataloged repunched mint marks for the 1947-D date speaks to the scale of die preparation at a facility striving to meet surging civilian demand — returning veterans flooding the consumer economy created an appetite for circulating coinage that kept the presses running at capacity. The hand-punching method used for mint mark application at all branch mints before 1989 required a die setter to position a small steel letter punch over each working die and strike it manually, introducing positional variance that was inevitable across hundreds of individual applications.
