1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-021

Description

Twenty-one cataloged repunched mint marks for the 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent underscores how extensively this common post-war date has been studied by variety specialists. WRPM-021, attributed by the Wexler Team, exhibits a D/D tilted or rotated repunched mint mark where the hand-applied punch entered at a different rotational angle on successive impressions. Die markers on the obverse include die scratches northeast on and above the bow tie, die gouges on the neck and chin area, and a die gouge to the right of the lower 9 in line with the left edge of the mint mark. Reverse diagnostics feature short diagonal die scratches under the upper and center arm of the E of CENT, plus a north-south die scratch inside the C of CENT. The 1947-D cent was struck in the standard bronze alloy of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc used continuously from 1944 through the end of the Wheat Cent series in 1958. Victor David Brenner's enduring portrait design, in production since 1909, provided the foundation on which Denver Mint die setters applied the D punch by hand to each obverse working die before it entered service.
