Description

Die scratch fingerprinting distinguishes WRPM-018 from the twenty-four other repunched mintmark varieties cataloged for the 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent. The D/D tilted and rotated mintmark shows the characteristic overlap pattern of a hand-punched letter struck at a different angle on the second application. Obverse die markers include N/S die scratches to the right of Lincoln's ear, and a die scratch at the forehead running east into the field. The reverse carries die scratches running north from the top of the E in STATES, a NE/SW die gouge centered below the last A of AMERICA, and a small die gouge dot located at the lower right of the last A in AMERICA. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 1947-D 1¢ WRPM-018 with no other known attributions, this variety was documented by the Wexler Team. Denver's 1947 production of 194,750,000 Lincoln Cents provided substantial material for variety hunters, and the hand-punching process used for mintmarks throughout this era generated numerous RPM varieties as mint employees applied the D punch to each working die individually. The concentration of die scratches around the reverse lettering — particularly the cluster near the final A of AMERICA — creates an efficient attribution pathway that can confirm the specific die without requiring microscopic examination of the mintmark repunching itself.
