1947-D Repunched Mintmark WRPM-014

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as WRPM-014, this 1947-D Lincoln Wheat Cent shows a D/D tilted or rotated repunched mint mark — evidence that the hand-applied Denver mint mark punch was impressed at a slightly different angle on a second strike. The bronze composition of 95% copper with 5% tin and zinc remained the standard for Wheat Cents throughout the post-war years. Several obverse die markers aid in attribution: a die gouge sits northeast of Lincoln's lips, an east-west die scratch appears in the hair below the W of WE, light die gouges trail southwest from the W of WE, and another die gouge extends southwest from the E of WE. On the reverse, a die gouge appears under the O in OF, another sits right of the first A of AMERICA, and a die chip marks the bottom edge of the left wheat stalk stem. The tilted repunch type indicates the second impression was applied not merely displaced in one direction but rotated relative to the first strike, creating a distinctive rotational doubling pattern on the D that distinguishes this variety from the more common north, south, east, or west displacements found among repunched mint marks of this era.
