Displaying an S/S East repunched mintmark with a distinctive Trumpet Tail (MMS-002), this 1945 San Francisco Washington Quarter combines two mintmark anomalies. Attributed by VarietyVista (UVC-0584, DMR-016), the Trumpet Tail refers to a flared extension on the mintmark resembling a small trumpet, created by punch characteristics or die polishing. Stage A: EDS unconfirmed. Stage B: MDS unconfirmed. Stage C: reverse and obverse are LMDS. Stage D: die crack from rim through first A of AMERICA to wing (LDS), obverse LDS. Struck during the final year of World War II in 90% silver, the 1945-S quarter was produced at San Francisco alongside wartime output for domestic commerce and military pay.
