1945-S Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-003
Error
Description
Extreme extra thickness characterizes WDDO-003 for the 1945-S Washington Silver Quarter, with the doubling affecting LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the date, and the lower queue of Washington's ponytail — an unusually broad range of design elements showing hub displacement. When doubling appears on both the peripheral legends and central portrait features simultaneously, it indicates a substantial hub shift between impressions during die manufacture. Obverse die markers include a die scratch running NNE from the top of the first T in TRUST, a short die scratch NNE from the upper right of the second T, and two parallel die scratches running SE from the upper right of Y in LIBERTY. No reverse die markers have been noted. San Francisco struck approximately 17.0 million quarters in 1945 from the 90% silver composition that would continue until 1964. The wartime date adds production context — San Francisco was one of three facilities maintaining silver quarter output while the nation's industrial capacity was stretched by military demands. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID: 1945-S 25¢ WDDO-003, with no additional cross-references known, the descriptive phrase "extreme extra thickness" in the attribution notes signals that this is among the stronger DDOs for the wartime Washington Quarter date range.
