1945 (S) Washington Quarter - Repunched Mintmark RPM-004

Description

Cross-referenced as FS-501, this 1945 San Francisco Washington Quarter combines three variety designations: an S/S North repunched mintmark, a Trumpet Tail mintmark (MMS-002), and a doubled die reverse listed as DDR-004. Attributed by VarietyVista (UVC-0580, DMR-012), the Trumpet Tail refers to a distinctive flared extension on the S mintmark. Stage A: EDS unconfirmed. Stage B: light die gouges through E PLURIBUS UNUM and around wings (MDS), obverse MDS. Stage C: reverse and obverse are LDS. Struck during the final year of World War II in 90% silver composition, the 1945-S quarter was produced at San Francisco for both domestic commerce and military pay. The convergence of an FS-listed repunched mintmark, a distinctive Trumpet Tail (MMS-002), and a doubled die reverse on one die pair makes this an unusually complex variety for Washington Quarter specialists.
